About us

Matias began in 1989, in Edgar Matias’ parents’ basement, in a suburb of Toronto. Since that time, it has survived the dot-com boom & bust, the Great Recession, and every other manner of calamity that can befall a startup.

The two main co-founders (Steve McGowan [left] and Edgar Matias [right]) have grown Matias into a globally recognized brand, known for high quality and a high level of personal customer service — a real person answers when you call / email, and if you have a problem, we try very hard to solve it.

95 Cousins 2015 Group Meeting

We love keyboard innovation, and are constantly developing and launching new keyboards. We get many of our ideas from customer suggestions, groups like Geekhack and Deskthority, and our distributors and retail store partners. We think a great keyboard can really enhance people's experience using their computer.

Matias has also gained a reputation for “rescuing” lost technologies, the most famous example being the use of Alps mechanical keyswitches in its award-winning Tactile Pro Keyboard. We like to advance the craft of keyboard technology, and if that means developing our own line of mechanical switches, that's what we do.

 Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard Award

We've had a long history of making keyboards for the assistive technology market, in particular our Half-QWERTY Pro Keyboard and our Half Keyboard, which allow you to touch-type with one hand. We've also expanded into ergonomics, with our Matias Ergo Pro Keyboard line. Throughout it all, we've been strong supporters of both the Mac and PC platforms.

One thing we are well-known for is filling in gaps in the Mac keyboard lineup. For example, when Apple discontinued its own wired aluminum keyboard, we created a worthy successor called the Matias Wired Aluminum Keyboard for Mac. This keyboard and other variations are widely used by schools, small and large companies, and governments around the world.

More recently, we have expanded into mice, using an amazing material called PBT. It looks us a long time to figure out the engineering details, but we're sure the big mouse companies will see what we've done and add some models to follow our path.

Our future will always involve product innovation, and combining that with customer service from people who care, means a better keyboard and mouse experience for you.
